Course Description

The organising committee is pleased to advise that the Round the Mountain Cycle ride in January 2007 will cover the classic 158km route.

From Pukekura Raceway, New Plymouth, you head downhill in a controlled start to turn left on the one-way system heading through New Plymouth to the Surf Highway.

As the road gently undulates its way South you pass through Oakura heading for the first drink stop and the first 5 person Team relay transition point at Okato.

Okato 28km

From Okato you continue riding the Surf Highway, passing the Maui Production Station as you head towards the next drink stop and 5 person team relay transition at Opunake. As well as offering great fishing, Opunake is a mecca for surfers. A lesser known feature of Opunake are the large murals decorating many of the town's buildings.

Just out of Opunake you leave the Surf Highway turning into Eltham Road. This leg of the journey cuts across the base of Mount Taranaki, where you ride through some of New Zealand's finest dairy farmland.

The shortest leg of the ride is from Opunake to Kaponga, the next drink stop, and the transition point for Two Person Relay Teams.

From Kaponga the course is effectively flat until Te Kiri, then the road climbs gently but steadily before you descend to the Eltham, home of the award winning Galaxy cheese range.

Eltham 105km

From Eltham you join SH 3 heading through Stratford, where you would be greeted by New Zealand's only Glockenspiel - if you ride through at 1 p.m., then through Midhurst on a gently undulating ride to the final drink station and 5 person relay team transition at Norfolk Hall

From Norfolk Hall you head toward Inglewood home of Roundabout, and  New Zealand's iconic Fun Ho museum.

Turning left at Inglewood you are now heading toward New Plymouth, riding on to  finish at Pukekura Raceway.
