As Leighton Smith reported in Taranaki's Daily News on 3 January
"Cyclists dig deep to beat conditions"
"Bad weather provided an additional obstacle to the already daunting task of cycling 258km around Mt Taranaki yesterday
.... 'The rain and the bad weather made the event a much tougher ride. It brought out a lot of strengths in people that they didn't think they had,' (Event Organiser) Robert Coe said. ' It took its toll both physically and mentally but it didn't break (the riders), they just kept going.'
"Outstanding riders included Tom Scott who completed the journey on a handbike in 10 hours, and New Plymouth cycling legend George Wharehoka, who in his 70s completed the ride in about eight hours."
"This event is the first contribution towards the proposed velodrome. Mr Coe thanked the sponsors, the New Zealand Community Trust, Mike Walsh of Mason Appliances and Panasonic for supporting the event."
